Hunger's Chain

- In Plato's Symposium, Diotima says Eros is a spirit halfway between god and man, the child of Poros (Plenty) and Penia (Poverty): he lacks beauty and wisdom, and the lack is what drives him toward them. Homer already pictures Heaven as the top of a chain, Zeus's golden one (Iliad 8). Desire is the link that holds the two worlds together. source ↩
- Is Life Made Great Through Death? gives her case: from Gilgamesh to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the old scriptures agree that without death there is only Nothing. Being glad to be born to die is the practical side of that conclusion. ↩
